12 May 2008. Phodong lamas make tormas

As I mentioned earlier, every week a group of monks from a different Karma Kagyu temple arrives to the Martam House to perform funeral rites. Today will be the last day when Shapten is conducted by the lamas from the nearby Nor Gompa.

The next week's prayers will be done by the monks from the Phodong Gompa. They have already arrived, and are about to start making tormas . Tormas are ritual offerings used in Tibetan Buddhism. A dough is made out of flour, water, and butter, and then it is shaped into a variety of sacred objects. The tormas are then dyed in bright colors and placed on an altar. Tormas are not reused and have to be disposed of properly. Thus today Phodong lamas are making their own tormas from scratch, and I will have a chance to see and record the whole process. I have set up a video-camera, took Wanchuk's and mine cameras, and went to the room where lamas were already hard at work kneading dough and making tormas.

See more photos at my Phodong lamas make tormas photo album.
Check out Wanchuk's blog entry for the same day.
