     BRO—The mountain tiger of nation

Drive like hell and you will be there
  • Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and its Project Swastik
  • Two kinds of BRO signs

No matter where you go in Sikkim you are bound to see the ubiquitous road signs erected by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) charged with building and maintaining roads in the border regions of India. BRO's activities in West Bengal and Sikkim are proudly carried out under the aegis of its Project Swastik; a westerner, even an educated and culturally sensitive one, is somewhat taken aback when seeing a sign like “Swastik: Your companion in Sikkim” adorned by a fat red swastika.

BRO road signs seem to fall into two main groups: the ones in the first category extoll the virtues of the BRO and show a certain swaggering braggadocio…

Border Roads Organisation: A leading quality and speedy road construction agency in the country Swastik Duty - Sikkim Beauty
Project Swastik: Ever wondered who defied death to build these roads? BRO - The organisation hat leads the way Swastik: The mountain tiger of nation
Swastik: BRO works today for your better tomorrow Swastik: Snow clad mountains, scorching deserts, inaccessible pockets - BRO is seen everywhere
Swastik: Your companion in Sikkim Swastik: Wish you a happy and safe journey

…while the signs in the second category display admonitions and exhortations; some of them rather inventive, featuring puns, metaphors, and rhymes.

Swastik: Driving faster can cause disaster If married divorce speed
Swastik: For safe arriving no liquor while driving Fast drive could be last drive
Be gentle on my curves Be gentle on my curve!
Swastik: BRO brings people of remote area to the main-stream Swastik: Smile, it is contagious
