No matter where you go in Sikkim you are bound to see the ubiquitous road signs erected by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) charged with building and maintaining roads in the border regions of India. BRO's activities in West Bengal and Sikkim are proudly carried out under the aegis of its Project Swastik; a westerner, even an educated and culturally sensitive one, is somewhat taken aback when seeing a sign like “Swastik: Your companion in Sikkim” adorned by a fat red swastika.
BRO road signs seem to fall into two main groups: the ones in the first category extoll the virtues of the BRO and show a certain swaggering braggadocio…
…while the signs in the second category display admonitions and exhortations; some of them rather inventive, featuring puns, metaphors, and rhymes.
Check out my Gangtok signs, Sikkim signs, and Darjeeling signs blog entries.
